Schools should be flexible, says QCA director
Posted on 12th February 2008
Schools should concentrate on brokering education rather than providing it, according to one industry practitioner.
State and independent schools should ensure they are adaptable to the changing modern world, Mike Waters has said.
In a speech to the National Children's Services Commissioning Conference this week, the director of the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) called for educational institutions to be driven by a culture of flexibility.
"Instead of saying 'there's the curriculum how do we make every child stretch to fit it' the question should be 'how do we get this curriculum and wrap it round children according to their needs, their demands and their experience'," he commented, according to the Guardian.
He added that activities commonly referred to as extra-curricular should be absorbed into the curriculum.
QCA is the responsible for the delivery, administration and development of national tests, as the regulator for the public examination system.
