London parents 'opting for boarding schools'
Posted on 11th February 2008
The limitations of London day school provision mean that a growing number of parents in the capital are considering the benefits of independent boarding schools, a new report notes.
Increasingly overstretched in terms of working hours and budgetary pressures, more couples in the city are realising the benefits of boarding schools, according to the Independent.
Boarding schools can be characterised by a culture of freedom and independence that appeals to parents wary of the competitive, exam-driven emphasis of some other London institutions, the publication observes.
The Lloyd family told the newspaper that they sent their son Tom to The Dragon, an Oxford boarding independent school, partly because of this flexible approach to schooling.
"They want their children to have freedom to run around, which many London prep schools can't provide," headmaster of the institution John Baugh said of parental motivation for sending their offspring away for a private education.
Meanwhile, Cheltenham Ladies' College principal Vicky Tuck recently told the Independent a growing number of independent schools are adopting the International Baccaleureate due to its broader, open approach to learning.
