Private school announces bursary fundraising
Posted on 31st December 2007
Leading private school Harrow has announced it is seeking to raise £40 million to help boys from poorer families attend.
Headmaster Barnaby Lenon said such bursaries can transform the lives of young students.
Furthermore, he said the current political environment is intolerant of schools which appear to be elitist.
The school charges fees of £26,000 a year.
Mr Lenon stated: "There is a strong case for assisting talented children to achieve their potential by enabling them to go to independent schools."
Earlier this year, executive director of policy and effectiveness with the Charity Commission Rosie Chapman warned she may "go nuclear" on private schools which fail to justify their charitable status.
She told the Financial Times the commission has the power to remove schools' trustees and even to freeze bank accounts for those institutions which do not do enough.
Ms Chapman warned that the largest and most wealthy schools would be expected to do the most to retain their charitable status and the tax breaks which go with it.
