Luxury schools 'costing parents a packet'
Posted on 21st December 2007
Europe's top boarding schools contain luxury facilities, with parents paying a hefty price to keep their children there, it has been reported.
News source Forbes warned that British boarding schools can cost $54,900 (£27,650) a year, with additional costs adding a further ten per cent.
Penny Bysshe, director of consultancy School Guidance, told the news agency the private schools allow pupils to become adults in a safe environment and gives them greater responsibilities at a younger age.
"Of course it's more than schmoozing and hot tubs. Small class sizes, vast resources and intensive drilling sessions get students into the world's top universities," Forbes claimed.
Last month the Independent Schools Council found that the number of its member schools' pupils who had been accepted into Britain's top 20 universities had risen to 65.6 per cent from 62.5 per cent in 2006.
It found high acceptance rates among its pupils, particularly to scientific, mathematical and technological courses.
