Children 'need to leave home alone'
Posted on 19th December 2007
Children allowed out to play without adult supervision become healthier and more sociable adults, a new study has claimed.
University College London has called upon parents to balance the dangers of strangers with the dangers of obesity caused by inactivity.
Its new report revealed that half of children aged between eight and 11 are not permitted to leave home by themselves.
Professor Roger Mackett, the academic who led the study, commented that letting children out to play alone offers them "significant benefits".
He warned: "The health benefits are clear, but without action the less tangible benefits of increased independence and self-reliance will be lost."
The Boarding School Association claims that boarding offers children an enhanced social life as well as additional independence, motivation and access to school facilities.
Children attending such private schools benefit from a wide variety of activities and a strong community spirit, it adds.
