New chair for ISC
Posted on 17th December 2007
The Independent Schools Council (ISC) has appointed a new non-executive chairman, it has been reported.
Dame Judith Mayhew Jonas, former head of the City of London Corporation, will take the role on from next month, the Financial Times reports.
She told the newspaper that in the future, projects running outreach programmes to state schools would be as important as bursaries to schools which want to meet Charity Commission guidelines and retain their charitable status.
Dame Judith's mission will be to ensure the private school sector successfully meets rules for assisting children from less wealthy backgrounds to show public benefit, the Financial Times states.
It claims her appointment has been welcomed by headteachers and lobbyists.
This year, ISC member schools offered pupils assistance with fees worth more than £300 million.
It states that over 160,000 students, more than 31 per cent of pupils, received assistance with fees during 2007.
