Private school chances for 3 bright teens
Posted on 10th December 2007
Three children "plucked" from a deprived estate in London's East End and given a full scholarship to one of the country's top private schools have spoken of their ambitions.
George Weller, Tosin Teriba and Horatio Georgestone were all awarded a free place at the independent boarding school Brighton College earlier this year - an establishment which usually charges fees of £24,000, the Times reports.
The three are achieving high academic results and talking of applying to Oxford or Cambridge, the newspaper states.
One of the children, George Weller, told the Times it is easier to concentrate at Brighton College as he is supervised and motivated. "It's easier, you don't get distracted," he said.
According to the Independent Schools Council, its member schools offered pupils assistance with fees worth more than £300 million in 2007. It reports that 31.43 per cent of pupils receive some help with their fees.
