Primary league shows improvement
Posted on 6th December 2007
This year's primary school league table have shown improvements in 54 per cent of schools, but revealed 44 per cent have delivered worse results than last year.
Eight out of ten Year 6 pupils are at the expected standard for their age in English, while 77 per cent have achieved the appropriate level in maths and 88 per cent in science.
Schools minister Lord Adonis said: "We are far from complacent and know there is more to do to ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to reach their full potential and we have a world class system everywhere."
However, last month the headteacher at a leading private school referred to league tables as a "cancer", suggesting they encourage "tick-box teaching".
Martin Stephen, high master of St Paul's School, said league tables were the "worst thing" to happen to education, the Times Educational Supplement reported.
The National Governors Association also spoke out against league tables last month, arguing that they could misrepresent schools.
