Education review demanded
Posted on 6th December 2007
Britain needs a "fundamental review" of its education system to discover why it is slipping down the international league tables, a politician has demanded.
David Laws, children, schools and families spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, made his comments following figures released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development which showed Britain has fallen from the top ten in just seven years.
The report found that the advantages of attending a private school are greater in Britain than any other of the countries it surveyed except Brazil and Qatar.
"British children's attainment has gone down in almost every league table despite a massive investment programme," Mr Laws stated.
He accused the government of having "short-changed" British school children and said a review of the system could help discover why it cannot manage as well as other countries.
Schools minister Jim Knight insisted that reforms being driven through will help pupils attain core skills such as numeracy and literacy.
