Private school offers lessons in manners
Posted on 27th November 2007
A leading private school has put manners on its curriculum, it has been reported.
Master of Wellington College Anthony Seldon told the Daily Telegraph pupils at his school are being instructed to touch their hats to teachers and open car doors for women or the elderly.
Furthermore, they must remove their hands from their pockets to sing hymns or the national anthem and stand when adults enter the room.
Dr Seldon said: "It is essential that we treat each other with respect, whether that's the person who cleans the boarders' rooms or the head."
In a speech on his party's education proposals last week, the Conservative leader David Cameron said he wants disciplined schools were pupils wear uniforms and stand up when the teacher enters.
He said that improved classroom discipline would shift the power back to teachers, allowing them to conduct classes without being distracted by troublemakers.
