Enthusiasm 'key to successful schools'
Posted on 21st November 2007
Enthusiastic and passionate teachers are essential to the success of a school and inspire pupils with a "can-do" attitude, an expert has commented.
Bernice McCabe, headmistress of the independent North London Collegiate School, told the Daily Telegraph that although politicians argue over the best way to guarantee a good education, the "key qualities" needed are both universal and easily recognised.
In addition to enthusiastic teachers, schools need a focus on learning and potential, extra-curricular activities and a careful pastoral care programme, she explained.
Ms McCabe said this is possible for any school if headteachers are allowed to lead and teachers allowed to focus on teaching.
"On one critical point, I have no doubts - the best schools are those that feel able to take responsibility for their own destiny and that are capable of defining their unique ethos," she stated, adding that this was possible for state as well as private schools.
The North London Collegiate School has been described as "arguably one of the best girls' schools in England" in the Tatler School Guide.
