Private school funding still outstripping state
Posted on 16th November 2007
Liberal Democrat leadership contender Chris Huhne has said the privileges available to private school pupils should be enjoyed by all children, it has been reported.
Mr Huhne said funding for each state school pupil should be raised to £8,655 a year, the average amount currently spent educating a child at an independent school, the Independent reports.
"There is a continuing rise in the number of children going through the private sector. This policy would help to ensure the polarisation of schooling does not get any worse," claimed the MP.
He said an increase in funding would ensure there are "no second-class children".
Recently, the Conservatives warned of a widening gap between the funding available to private schools and to state comprehensives.
The opposition claimed that by the year 2010, state funding will amount to only £6,600 per child, while in the independent sector it will have risen to £10,200, the Daily Telegraph reported.
