Independent bodies 'to create curriculum'
Posted on 14th November 2007
A group of independent school bodies intend to create a rival national curriculum following claims that government reforms "sacrificed" important aspects of education for more fashionable causes, it has been reported.
Michael Spinney, chairman of the Independent Association of Prep Schools (IAPS), told the Girls' School Association conference that many groups feel the government is undermining the national curriculum with its "social agenda", the Daily Mail reported.
He claimed: "Increasingly, we are living in an era where teaching and learning are sacrificed in favour of fashionable causes, often with disastrous effects upon standards of learning."
Several of the leading private education bodies are involved in the plans to launch a new curriculum, the newspaper reported.
They include the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference, the Girls' School Association, the Independent Schools Association, and the Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses of Independent Schools, it said.
Speaking at the IAPS conference in September, Mr Spinney said the private sector is founded upon "two pillars", the value of independence and an ability to accommodate change.
