'Eradicate failure through private schools'
Posted on 31st October 2007
Gordon Brown has declared his intention of "eradicating failure" among comprehensives by closing failing schools or encouraging independent schools to take them over as academies.
He said there would be 150 more academies created over the next three years to help towards the target of 400.
Mr Brown made his comments to the University of Greenwich this morning, saying Britain needs a "world class" education system.
He called for: "More local authorities
putting academies at the heart of their local school improvement plans and more independent schools setting up academies to take over failing schools."
Academies are publicly funded independent schools with sponsors found among businesses, charities and faith groups, and independent schools.
Earlier this month schools minister Lord Adonis urged independent schools to help run academies and dropped a requirement that schools contribute £2 million in sponsorship.
He told the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference it was their "educational DNA" the government sought to use in its academies.
