Independent schools 'should not drop core values'
Posted on 25th October 2007
Independent schools should hold on to their primary values irrespective of changing fashions, according to one industry insider.
Judith Sischy, director of the Scottish Council of Independent Schools, told the Independent that traditional methods used in "ancient" educational institutions are at the forefront of some of the new developments.
"Some of the tenets which independent schools have always held on to such as homework acting as a link between the teachers, the child and the parents are now becoming popular nationwide," she told the paper.
Ms Sischy suggested that traditional ways that are at the core of independent schools "stick out like a sore thumb" when they go out of fashion.
However, she said schools should not let go of such values "just because they are no longer trendy".
Founded nearly 30 years ago, the Scottish Council of Independent Schools represents 96 per cent of the independent education sector in Scotland, according to its website.
