Pimlico school debate rages on
Posted on 23rd October 2007
The debate over Pimlico comprehensive and who or what ought to be its sponsor has raged on following the decision to allow the charitable trust Future, led by Conservative donor John Nash, to support the school when it becomes an academy.
Under the academies scheme, schools can be sponsored by independent organisations.
Such sponsors could be philanthropists, existing private schools or faith communities and the government recently announced top schools and colleges would no longer have to provide financial sponsorship as their professional expertise was of greater value.
Councillor Paul Dimoldenberg, leader of the Labour group on the local council told the Guardian: "It is outrageous that the Conservatives are handing over control to prominent Conservative supporters".
He added that John Nash's Conservative connections were not mentioned in the council cabinet report.
Recently, the successful independent Westminster School offered to sponsor the Pimlico academy when Ofsted failed it, however, their offer was rejected by the council, the Evening Standard reported.
