School 'seeking challenge' of Confucius programme
Posted on 19th October 2007
One of the ten private schools involved in the Confucius programme with China has said it is looking forward to the challenge.
Highgate School is to become involved with the programme, which is funded by the Chinese government and seeks to build language and cultural links between the two countries.
It will sponsor the teaching of Mandarin and Chinese culture in the selected schools and set up twinning schemes and pupil trips.
The school's headteacher Adam Pettitt told the Enfield Independent it was a good time to join the programme as the school was reviewing its modern languages provision.
"We are confident with Western European languages and now have a chance to learn something completely different," he said.
Headteacher of Brighton College, another of the independent schools taking part, Richard Cairns told the BBC China will be the second largest economy when his current pupils leave school and warned: "We ignore China at our peril."
