Top public school targets state pupils
Posted on 12th October 2007
A top independent school in Huntingdon is to open its doors to A-level pupils from local state schools, it has been reported.
Two pupils attending state schools in the area are to be offered the opportunity to study at Kimbolton School, the Town Crier reports.
The governors are offering means-tested bursaries of up to 100 per cent for the two students to cover their cost of education.
Among other benefits, such as uniform fees, the bursaries should negate the need for any school fees insurance .
Headmaster Jonathan Belbin said the school was keen to reduce the number of scholarships it gives out and move towards bursaries instead.
Non means-tested scholarships "means that we gave [them] to pupils who do not need the financial assistance," he explained.
Kimbolton normally charges £10,000 per pupil for admission to the 160-strong sixth form.
A recent survey by JP Morgan Asset Management found that 18 per cent of parents are using their own or their partner's pension to finance their child's education, including expenses such as school fees cover.
