49% children victims of theft at school
Posted on 11th October 2007
Nearly half of children have had property stolen while at school, a new report has revealed.
Research published by the Howard League for Penal Reform found 95 per cent of children have been the victim of some form of crime and 49 per cent had had property stolen while in the school grounds.
A further 18 per cent had had possessions stolen as they travelled between school and home.
The report, entitled Child Sized Crimes in a Child Sized World surveyed more than 3,000 children across Britain over a seven-year period.
Frances Crook, director of the Howard League for Penal Reform said: "Ironically, the very institutions where children should feel safest their school environments set up and patrolled by adults are where children are most commonly victimised."
Earlier this year a report released by esure.com revealed children aged between 11 and 16 fill their school bags with gadgets and possessions worth an average £265.
