Burglar urges students to wise up
Posted on 11th October 2007
A Manchester burglar has urged students to be more careful with their possessions and stop making themselves easy targets.
Reformed thief 'Phillip' committed more than 360 crimes before being sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison and has appealed to students to protect their belongings, through the Manchester Evening News.
"Students make themselves vulnerable. Student accommodation has no security, they leave things on show," he claimed.
Phillip made his comments to the newspaper following its report that more than 7,000 students in the Manchester, Salford and Bolton area had been victims of crime during the last university year.
That is an average of 20 crimes against students a day and police in Greater Manchester believe criminals are making around £30,000 by robbing students, it reported.
A survey conducted by Churchill of students across Britain discovered one in ten was the victim of a theft or burglary while away from home, at an average cost of £470 each.
It urged students to ensure they had adequate insurance to cover their possessions in the event they became the target of a thief.
