Private schools encourage low-income families
Posted on 27th September 2007
A collection of private schools in London have launched an advertising campaign designed to encourage children from low or middle-income families to apply for places.
The group of 19 independent schools includes Westminster and St Paul's, reports the Evening Standard.
A joint statement from the schools involved said that "large sectors" of the community did not realise a third of pupils received "significant assistance" with fees.
It said: "This campaign is about the principle that income should not bar a child from attending an independent school. It is not about individual schools."
The Evening Standard contacted 11 London schools, of which four said bursaries could be awarded to families with incomes of up to £55,000. The other seven said each case was taken on its own merits.
In 2007, 31 per cent of pupils at schools belonging to the Independent Schools Council received help with fees, the council reports.
The value of the assistance was more than £300 million.
