PM pledge 'replicates private education'
Posted on 26th September 2007
An expert has welcomed Gordon Brown's pledge to provide more personalised learning in state schools, saying it will help pupils experience the advantages received by their privately educated counterparts.
Steve Sinnott, general secretary of the National Union of Teachers, made his comments in response to Gordon Brown's Labour party conference speech in which he promised greater personalised learning in state schools.
Mr Brown pledged catch-up lessons for 300,000 struggling primary school children and the continued support of a personal tutor for future secondary pupils.
"The commitment to increase massively the offer of one-to-one tuition in state schools means a significant move towards replicating the advantages currently experienced by those in private education," Mr Sinnott said.
However, EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson told the BBC's Today programme that having explained the "what" the prime minister had to explain "the how".
Mr Brown is "absolutely right" that public services should be individually tailored but implementing it will be a "big challenge", he added.
