PM promises personal learning
Posted on 25th September 2007
Gordon Brown has promised pupils will receive greater amounts of personalised learning and called for an education system which values individuals and their skills.
His plans will mean 300,000 primary school children will receive individual lessons in literacy and numeracy and 600,000 secondary school pupils gain tuition in small groups.
The prime minister promised "learning personal to each pupil - education available to all, not one-size fits all, but responding to individual needs".
Personal tutors would provide continued support to pupils throughout their secondary school careers under Mr Brown's plans.
He also said it was wrong that people were "put off" higher education as a result of the cost and pledged greater support for 16-year-olds from low-income families.
A few days ago the secretary of state for schools Ed Balls answered readers' questions in the Independent and said he wanted greater amounts of personalised learning in every school, "not just fee-paying ones".
