Private school 'can cost £20,000'
Posted on 11th September 2007
Despite the average annual cost of private education being £6,655, sending children to a private day school can cost parents as much as £20,000, it has been reported.
Research suggests parents whose children begin at private school aged five will spend £200,000 in total over the following 14 years, writes the Times.
It states research by AWD Chase de Vere shows even parents who wait until secondary level to send the children to an independent school will end up paying £136,000 over the course of their schooling.
The Times recommends families' begin saving for their child's education as soon as possible after its birth and seek help from grandparents where possible.
It also suggests parents consider putting their child forward for scholarships or even releasing equity from their homes to cover the increasing cost of education.
Recent research from Alliance and Leicester suggested extra curricular activities could cost parents an additional £3 billion a year as music lessons can cost £20 an hour and after-school football around £40 a season.
