Government "pleased" with school standards
Posted on 31st August 2007
The Department for Children, Schools and Families has welcomed the latest results for seven-year-old children.
According to the department, nine out of ten pupils have achieved the expected level or above in maths, with 84 per cent reaching the desired level in reading.
Schools minister Andrew Adonis said he was "pleased" that standards within primary education are being maintained and congratulated schools and teachers for their efforts.
"We know that children who reach the expected level in reading, writing and maths at seven years old have a much better chance of leaving primary school with a solid foundation in literacy and numeracy skills," Lord Adonis said.
However, despite the progress made over the course of the last ten years, more needs to be done to continue this rate of improvement, he added.
Earlier in the month, the minister praised the 2007 Key Stage 2 results, claiming that the introduction of literacy hours and daily maths lessons have had a significant impact upon primary school attainment.
