Independent school welcomes girls
Posted on 30th August 2007
An independent school in Scotland has opened the doors of its junior school to girls for the first time in 170 years.
Edinburgh Academy began its move towards co-educational status, leaving only two all-boys schools in Scotland, reports the Herald.
John Light, rector of the school, said that people were deciding to overlook the school if they had two children, seeking a school which offered a single set of teachers instead.
"The move to co-education, seen as important both to replicate society more accurately and also to improve revenue, brings the academy into a more competitive market, but one with a larger pool of prospective pupils," he told the newspaper.
According to the academy, girls over the age of 16 have been attending the school for 40 years, but from Autumn 32 girls will be starting the junior school for the first time.
The school now claims to offer "superlative" education to girls of all ages.
