GCSE results 'could rise again'
Posted on 20th August 2007
Results are to be published on Thursday which are likely to show one in five GCSE exams has scored an A grade, an expert has claimed.
Director of the Centre for Education and Employment research at Buckingham University Professor Alan Smithers said recent trends suggested the rate of high passes would rise again.
He made his comments to the Daily Mail and claimed the pass rate at C and above could be higher than 2006 where 62.4 per cent of students managed the top grades.
The claims come amid recommendations from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority suggesting children should be able to complete up to half their GCSEs before the end of the course.
This would be more in keeping with the structure of A-levels but Professor Smithers is concerned over the possibilities of re-sits.
He said: "The retaking of units - even once - introduces an element of unfairness."
