School buildings upgrade plan questioned
Posted on 9th August 2007
MPs on the Commons education select committee have raised concerns over the government's £45 billion Building Schools for the Future (BSF) project.
Under the proposals, the money is to be set aside for rebuilding all of England's secondary schools.
However, the committee's chairman Barry Sheerman said that the scheme would have to be reviewed to ensure that it was the most constructive way of investing £45 billion in education, reports the BBC.
Responding to the committee's findings, children's minister Kevin Brennan said: "BSF will equip every secondary school with facilities to inspire young minds and support teachers even more in the excellent job they do."
According to the government, the BSF programme aims to ensure that secondary school children have access to the latest resources and "21st-century facilities".
By 2011, every local authority in England is expected to have been given funding to renew the school in their area most in need of development.
