University to sponsor academy
Posted on 30th July 2007
Camden Council has approved plans announced by University College London (UCL) to sponsor an academy school.
The university intends to provide funding for a school in the area to improve science, maths and languages, the Guardian reports.
Michael Worton, vice provost at UCL, told the newspaper that the university would not be running the school, but would provide student mentoring and classroom support, as well as drawing on its expertise in a number of areas.
"We have found our existing collaboration with Camden and Islington sixth-form college had a valuable role in raising student attainment and aspiration," he remarked.
Mr Worton said that such sponsorship schemes should ensure that children have the kind of maths and science education universities are looking for.
In related news, Wellington College recently became the first independent school in the UK to provide funding for a state academy.
The new school in Tidworth, Wiltshire, is to specialise in modern foreign languages, business and enterprise.
