New engineering diplomas receive support
Posted on 25th July 2007
The government's plans to introduce a new diploma in engineering next year have received the backing of major players within the industry.
Publishing a new leaflet promoting the initiative, the Department for Children, Schools and Families said that British Gas, JCB, REW npower and the Royal Academy of Engineering have all announced their support.
Children, schools and families secretary Ed Balls commented: "The crucial support from employers and teachers today shows that not only are we getting it right, but we are also on track to deliver a rigorous and demanding programme of education and training next year."
The department worked alongside members of the industry and universities to create a diploma to ensure that it meets the requirements of both employers and learners, he added.
Last week, business leaders and members of the university and voluntary sectors met for the first time as the National Council for Educational Excellence to discuss ways in which independent schools can work alongside state institutions to improve the UK's education system.
