Prime minister announces plans to raise school leaving age
Posted on 12th July 2007
Prime minister Gordon Brown told MPs on Wednesday that his government planned to introduce a new educational opportunity bill that would see the school leaving age raised.
Outlining his plans for the country, Mr Brown said that the government needed to meet the "rising aspirations" of the British public and create new opportunities within the education sector.
Mr Brown said that the proposed educational bill would see all young people staying on in education or training until the age of 18.
Responding to Mr Brown's statement, Conservative party leader David Cameron said that the plan for offering education to all after the age of 16 was one of the Labour party's proposals in 1996.
"For ten years he's plotted and schemed for the top job, but all we've got is a sort of re-release of the 1997 manifesto," Mr Cameron argued.
