National Council for Educational Excellence launched
Posted on 11th July 2007
Children, schools and families secretary Ed Balls has announced the creation of a new body aimed at achieving the government's long-term strategy for improving education in the UK.
The National Council for Educational Excellence, which will be chaired by Mr Balls and prime minister Gordon Brown, will bring together members of the business, university, voluntary and education sectors.
It is intended to "transform expectations" for the UK's education system, while also providing advice to the government on the best strategies to see the country offer the highest standards of education.
Mr Balls said that in order to achieve these goals, the government needs to make it easier for these sectors to contribute to national education strategy.
"This Council and its members will act as advocates and champions, mobilising every section of the community behind this national mission, and in particular, driving our aspiration that every secondary school should have a business and university partner," he remarked.
Mr Balls also announced this week that the department would be undertaking a major review of maths teaching in primary schools to ensure that levels of achievement in numeracy continue to improve.
