School uniform has positive influence
Posted on 10th July 2007
A new report has revealed that wearing a school uniform can help to improve the behaviour of students.
A survey of teenage pupils conducted by Oxford Brookes University found that uniforms often ensured that children were not bullied by their peers for wearing unfashionable or unconventional clothing, the Daily Mail reports.
The university also discovered that behaviour outside of school improved, as pupils were more wary of being recognised in their uniforms.
Professor Margaret Harris, who led the research, said that uniforms often contributed to school pride and influenced behaviour away from school premises.
"Students tended to be most in favour of smart and distinctive school uniforms," she stated.
Rhys Williams, spokesman for the National Union of Teachers Cymru, recently told the Western Mail that a tying a school tie is a "life skill".
Mr Williams argued that, despite a move away from formal uniforms, by the time pupils reach secondary schools they should be able to knot a tie and he would recommend wearing one to a male pupil about to attend an interview.
