Gender of teachers has 'limited impact on attainment'
Posted on 6th July 2007
Efforts to recruit more male teachers to provide boys with more positive male role models may not be as productive as first thought, according to a new report.
Research by the Department for Children, Schools and Families found that although there is a "gender imbalance" within teaching, male staff do not have a major impact upon achievement among boys.
The report stated that "there is very little evidence to date as to whether a teacher's gender does or does not play a significant role in their pupils' attainment".
Graham Holley, chief executive of the Training and Development Agency for Schools, said that the teaching workforce should be more "diverse" and more representative of society, the Daily Mail reports.
Despite the findings of the report, Mr Holley said he wanted to see a greater number of men moving into the primary school sector.
