Government announces behaviour programme
Posted on 6th July 2007
The government has pledged to provide greater funding to tackle poor behaviour in state schools.
Children, schools and families secretary Ed Balls announced that an extra £13.7 million over four years will be made available to the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning programme.
So far the pilot scheme carried out in a number of schools has seen a major improvement in discipline and achievement, the department claimed.
Mr Balls said: "The programme will make sure that all children understand the importance of being confident and interacting with other children in a respectful and positive manner."
Such initiatives provide teachers with powerful tools to tackle poor behaviour and ensure that schools foster an "atmosphere of respect", he added.
The schools inspectors' organisation Ofsted recently reported that the Secondary National Strategy's pilot programme for developing social, emotional and behavioural skills was more effective when teachers understood its "underlying philosophy".
Ofsted argued that the programme proved to be successful when teachers adapted their methods to take their pupil's requirements into account.
