News for our School customers – Issue Two: October 2010
Topic of the Month – Liability Claims – Injury and Damage to Third Party Property
Please remember that when an injury occurs, pure accidents do happen. It is only if negligence by the school can be proved that an insurer will pay out. Therefore, it is essential that you:
• Do not admit liability.
• Gather witness statements, accident report, photographs and any relevant maintenance or H & S records (if building or machinery involved).
• Warn SFS group that you have had the incident and that a claim may arise.
• When the claimant’s solicitor’s letter arrives, do not acknowledge it, but scan/email to SFS Group (lisa.fairbrother@sfs-group.co.uk) and we will forward to the relevant ZM department.
• Be prepared to react to requests for further information from SFS/ZM.
• The appendix below shows the types of documentation required for different types of claims.
• All claims forms can be obtained from Lisa Fairbrother.

What the papers say…” – Media Training London 9th November
Ernie Rea and Gaynor Vaughan Jones, our BBC journalist experts, will be running a “Handling the Media in a Crisis” training seminar in London on Tuesday 9th November. This one day training package gives sound advice and practical experience in being interviewed by the media using realistic scenarios. The day also includes a mock press conference in which everyone participates.
Here is what some of our school customers have said about previous media training days:
“Excellent feedback from the presenters on individual performance…informal but purposeful atmosphere.” King Edward VI’s School, Southampton.
“People involved had a wealth of experience and gave excellent feedback…” Westbourne House.
The cost is £125 per person (There is a discount of £25 per person per place, if two or more people from one school attend). This seminar is particularly suitable for Heads and Governors.
To register your interest for this event, please contact Lisa Fairbrother on 01306 746311 or email Lisa.fairbrother@sfs-group.co.uk
“The inevitable never happens; the unexpected always.”
The Autumn Term is a good time to brush up the school’s Crisis Management plan, particularly before the school overseas trips and winter skiing holidays begin. SFS has acquired a new consultancy partner, Salamanca Risk Management, who bring to the sector their considerable corporate risk advice and experience of working with the police. Their services can be tailored to your needs: review an existing plan, provide a new one, deliver training or reactive services.
