The University of Cambridge has insisted that academically gifted students should not be deterred from applying because of their financial circumstances.Amid criticism that private school pupils are preferred to state sector applicants at top institutions, the university has sought to underline its commitment to academic excellence, regardless of financial circumstances or ability to pay university fees.
"The University of Cambridge is determined to admit the best and brightest students regardless of their background, and is committed to an extensive range of outreach activities to make this a reality," explained a spokesperson for the university.
The university is set to offer one of the most extensive financial support packages this year, including access to a £3,500 Cambridge Bursary for all UK students from families with an income below £25,000.
"Our goal is to ensure that anyone with the ability, passion and commitment to apply to Cambridge has a clear picture of what the University can offer them," added the spokesperson.
